Why see Mary Poppins?

A WITTY SLICE OF CHARM AND LONDON VICTORIANA

Based on Disney's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious-ly classic family movie, Mary Poppins is flying into town with the help her trusty parrot umbrella, to turn the lives of the staid Banks family upside down. An absolute musical classic, the Sherman Brothers score is packed full of memorable songs, including 'Feed the Birds', 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious', 'A Spoonful of Sugar' and 'Chim Chim Cher-ee'.

The original 2007 production, written by Downtown scribe Julian Fellowes, took Broadway by storm, winning a Tony and two Drama Desk Awards, and played over 2,500 performances to delighted audiences.

WHAT IS MARY POPPINS ABOUT?

Jane and Michael Banks long desperately to spend time with their workaholic father, Mr Banks. However, Mr Banks would prefer that his high-spirited children become quiet and well-behaved, and so sets out to hire a nanny.

The children find themselves in the care of Mary Poppins, who is both stern yet sweet, proper but adventurous, and has just a little touch of magic about her. Can she convince the Banks to reconcile with each other as a family before the wind changes?

Loved Mary Poppins!

We went to see Mary Poppins on its opening night in Calgary and we loved the production! We sat in the 2nd Balcony and our seats were good enough as the sound is wonderful anywhere you sit. We especially liked "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" with the great dancing as well as "Step In Time" - again with the dancing. There was lots of humor in it, great singing and just nice to see a play from a movie you saw many years ago. There were quite a few children at the Jubilee and they must have all enjoyed it because we only heard a wee bit of chattering near the end. I would take kids to it but probably not under 5 years old as it is a long production even though it does have an intermission. There were a few changes from the movie - "I Love To Laugh" was not in there but there were a few new songs I hadn't heard and it all flowed very well. Highly recommend seeing! ... Read more
